It’s fitting that we as a fashion community collectively expressed a desire for comfort, dependability, and stability during a year of such unrest and anxiety. Case in point: we became just a little obsessed with sneakers in 2016. We paired them with slim leg white jeans, cocktail dresses, sweater dresses, maxi dresses, midi skirts, and mini skirts. Bye, stilettos. Hello, Stan Smiths! We couldn’t find a single excuse to slip off our Vans slip-ons, and weren’t the least bit mad about it. In fact, our feet have never been happier, which is a great place to start, by the way, in the quest for overall peace of mind and happiness.
While we absolutely do not plan on packing away our A.P.C. Steffi sneakers come 2017, there’s no time like the present to throw it back a dozen months and take a flat-footed walk down memory lane to admire the sneaker styles that made us go gaga this year. According to ShopStyle data, the most shopped kicks of 2016 include Balenciaga Race Runners, Kenneth Cole Kam sneakers, orange Valentino Open sneakers, Alexander McQueen leather sneakers, Golden Goose sneakers, and Chiara Ferragni low-tops to start.
There were the cool collaboration kicks: tan Yeezy sneakers, Adidas by Stella McCartney Alaytas, Comme des Garcons Chuck Taylor Play sneakers, and New Balance x J.Crew sneakers. How could we forget about the chic takes on traditional sporty styles: Adidas Gazelles, Nike Juvenate sneakers, Nike Free Flyknits, and Nike Air Max Theas? And of course, some of favorite go-to shoes you could pair with a slip dress: off-white Converse Chuck Taylors, Adidas Superstars, and Superga Cotu low-tops.
Shockingly left off of ShopStyle’s list, but certainly topping ours, was Footwear News’ 2016 Shoe of the Year: Fenty By Puma Creepers. Riri’s platforms succeeded Kanye West’ Adidas Originals Yeezy 350 Boost shoes, which won the award last year. Don’t fight it – do the creep.
