It’s rare to meet a girl more interested in men’s clothes than in women’s, but that’s exactly the case with Marisa Zupan.
Marisa—the 27-year-old Brooklyn-based founder of the menswear blog, The Sig Other—proves her aficionado status with detailed musings on shoes, ties, bags, watches and more for guys; features on subtle, quality brands like Mismo and Lotuff; and profiles of real men’s personal style—usually that of smart, interesting, well-dressed friends. We’re so impressed, we caught up with Marisa this week to give you a glimpse of her world:
Where do you live?
Brooklyn, New York.
How long have you been blogging?
Since early 2010.
How did you get the idea to start a blog? What was your original aim, and has it changed?
I started the blog because I needed an outlet to document the things I loved about menswear. It was originally a very personal project and it became increasingly public as the months went on. It’s now the place I collaborate with the companies and people I meet and admire along the way. Also, being part of the menswear community has ironically led me to be interested in womenswear. And that was something I definitely did not expect but am enjoying very much.
What did you wear today? What was your outfit inspiration?
Lately I’ve been very inspired by young Meryl Streep from around the time she made “Kramer vs. Kramer,” very late ’70s. So today I wore a men’s button-up from Seize sur Vingt, high waisted trousers by Steven Alan, a wide brim hat by Rag & Bone and my boyfriend’s Junya Watanabe trench. I kept hair and makeup as natural as possible. No fuss.
What is your favorite day of the week and why?
Sundays, because usually I keep them wide open so I can go on random adventures around the city. They tend to be my most creative and relaxing days, too.
Coffee or tea?
Coffee! It is what I look forward to every morning.
Early bird or night owl?
Smoky eyes or bold lip?
Dog person or cat lover?
Both! Although currently I own an adorable long hair calico cat, Penny, who I adore.
Silver or gold?
Gold. Gold every time.
What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I love that I can be creative as well as business-minded. It’s incredible to be part of building a brand and a company at the same time.
What is your favorite downtime activity?
I am really into Pilates. It is a form of exercise I truly enjoy, so when my schedule slows down I try to work it in as much as I can.
