With the perfect missing pieces to pull together your wardrobe—we are thrilled that Ramy Brook is part of eBay’s Designer Collective. So we sat down with their founder and creative director, Ramy Brook Sharp, to talk Sunday soccer, Coco Chanel quotes, and the keys to building a successful business.
How would describe your role and your day-to-day at Ramy Brook?
Everyday I start my day in the office/showroom. We start the week with a team meeting. I feel it’s important that all departments are kept in the loop. Fashion involves many layers. Production, design, web, PR, and sales are all critical in the process of building a successful company. I meet with the design team to discuss our vision. I meet with sales to discuss how we are going to grow the business. I meet with PR to discuss strategy. I meet with our web team to discuss how we can improve the experience for our customer. At the end of every day I try to get to the store before it closes. We recently opened out first store in Soho, New York.
Why did you decide to launch your own line?
Ramy Brook came from a place of need. I had a closet full of jeans—but never the right top to wear. I was looking for something sexy, sophisticated and timeless. I wanted solid tops that I could wear with my jewelry. I asked everyone I knew in the garment district for help and advice… I met an amazing pattern maker who introduced me to a very talented sample maker and a few months later I had a collection of seven sexy tops.
You’re an expert! So, what are the essentials every woman should have in her closet?
Every woman needs great tops. Tops for daytime, tops that take you from day to night, and a great “date” night top. Jeans are a must. And black pants are always a great go-to. Heels are plus, too—they give you the height to make you feel on top of the world.
What are a few of your favorite trends for fall? What will you be wearing?
Fringe is a trend I love. You’ll see it in our handbags and as a recurring detail in our ready-to-wear. I will be wearing it all fall—with great leather and suede leggings.
What are your “date night” or “dinner party” go-to outfits?
My go to top is called the “Harriet”. I can wear it six different ways and with anything on the bottom. That’s because we design Ramy Brook tops to be versatile, and many can be worn more than one way. The “Paige” top for example can be tied down the back where there is a “v”. For a more daring look, wear the “v” in the front and let the ties hang. For work, the tops are excellent layering pieces—whip off that jacket or sweater and you’re all set for nighttime.
Do you (or does Ramy Brook) have a style icon?
I’m influenced by many designers. Coco Chanel has one of my favorite quotes: “A women should be 2 things… Classy and fabulous.” As for modern day designers—Donna Karen has always been a woman I admire.
What is the highest compliment anyone has ever paid you?
The highest compliment is when people say I have great kids! Means I’m doing a pretty good job—it’s not easy balancing everything.
Do you have a favorite quote or mantra?
There are actually a few mantras that I find meaningful. Most of them are from my mom—she sends me quotes daily! “What comes around goes around,”—that one has been with me my whole life. It reminds me all the good we do will come back.
What’s the best thing you’ve bought on eBay?
I haven’t bought anything yet, but I’m obsessed with a particular Rolex that I have my eye on.
Is there something you collect? Or one thing you love dearly?
I’m not a big collector of one particular item. But one might say I’m a collector of jewelry. Materially speaking—I love my engagement ring. On a greater level—it’s my family I Iove dearly!!!
What do you love to do when you’re not designing? What are you up to this weekend?
I love to work out—spinning and running. I also love going out with my friends and shopping—it helps me recharge… This weekend we have dinner plans Friday night and a Bar Mitzvah Saturday night. Sunday’s my daughter’s soccer game, and Sunday night is always our family dinner including our sisters, brothers, and lots of cousins—my husband is a great cook.
