Great news for those of us who’ve given up on watching Kardashian contouring, cat eyeliner, rainbow highlighter, and ombre liquid lipstick YouTube tutorial videos! Each new major fashion season introduces new beauty trends to try, and we can’t wait to dive into the following much buzzed about techniques, brought to you straight from the runway. Read on to discover five (surprisingly doable) beauty trends that have taken the fashion scene by storm since their recent debuts.
1. Vamp Lips (A.K.A. The Rihanna Effect)
Dior, Marc Jacobs, Marni, Mary Katrantzou, Louis Vuitton, and Max Mara may have painted their models’ pouts with plum and deep oxblood, but the arguably original inspiration for this season’s raven lips may lie within the trendsetting style of one Robyn Rihanna Fenty. The notoriously cool and rebellious celebrity has been spotted donning a dark lip more times than she’s been photographed accessorizing with a wine glass, which ICYMI, is pretty darn often. So it’s no surprise her Fenty x Puma runway show was sprinkled with gothic glamor a la It Girl Gigi Hadid sporting a matte-black mouth.
The trend (not surprisingly) caught on and trickled down to the Met Gala red carpet, where stars including Poppy Delevingne, Amber Heard, Miranda Kerr, Rose Byrne, Brie Larson, and Rachel McAdams were all united in their tributes to futuristic rouge-noir stains. Recreate the look du jour for a bold night out by choosing a color anywhere from dark wine to black and pairing your daring pout with minimal eye makeup. Try Kevyn Aucoin Expert Lip Color in Bloodroses or Tom Ford Lip Color in Bruised Plum.
2. Glitter Eyes
Black eyeliner and basic smokey shadows are so blasé for fall. Tommy Hilfiger, Opening Ceremony, Marc Jacobs, Saint Laurent, Burberry, and Giambattista Valli shows have all given us the excuse we didn’t know we were looking for to amp up our evening eye looks. If you’ve ever fantasized about serenading a sold-out crowd, this is your chance to feel like the rock star you are on the inside. Adding a hint (or hoard) of glitter to your usual makeup routine could give you just the confidence booster you’ve been searching for (or never knew you’d appreciated so much).
Take a cue from celebrity sisters Elle and Dakota Fanning, who were photographed at Saint Laurent’s L.A. show with some seriously show-stopping gleaming beauty looks. Elle donned a cat eye dripping in glitter and Dakota chose a bright blue glittering upper lash line. As François Nars said backstage at Marc Jacobs, “Everyone loves glitter, right?” Add some sparkle to your routine by keeping everything else completely minimal (think bare skin and simple liner) and stick to just one color for the chicest look. Oh, and according to makeup artist Wendy Rowe, who ran the glam squad responsible for the high shine splendor at Burberry, the key to pulling off a glitter eye this fall “lies in using an oversize glitter…and being haphazard in your application. If it drops onto the cheekbone, that’s a great thing. It needs to feel effortless.” Challenge accepted.
3. Braid and Pigtails
We don’t always attempt to replicate Kim Kardashian’s trendsetting hairstyles, but when we do, we force our sisters to french braid our hair and pose with us just like Kim and North did for an Instagram snap with their matching braided ‘dos. The plaits in question are also known as “boxer braids” and have been popping up in our feeds on the regular recently. The best part about working triple woven strands into your fall beauty routine (and there are so many! Hello, disguised second or third-day greasy hair!) is that there really are no rules. Aim for a sleek finish or embrace the bedhead. The way you work braids this season is entirely up to you. We’re just happy to be putting to use a skill we haven’t busted out since middle school sleepovers.
4. Twiggy Lashes
66 years old and still inspiring the young fashion-obsessed set, Twiggy has no doubt secured her place in the beauty trend hall of fame. Larger than life Twiggy-inspired eyelashes are as celebrated and a part of history as Jennifer Aniston’s “Rachel” haircut or Cara Delevingne’s eyebrows. The best way to welcome a bit of mod ‘60s flair into your fall style statements is by generously heaping mascara onto both upper and lower lashes (test drive L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Butterfly Intenza mascara or Giorgio Armani Beauty Eyes to Kill mascara) and even adding drama to lower lashes by painting extra “twigs” beneath your peepers with a liquid eyeliner (give Givenchy Parad’Eyes Fluid Eye Liner a whirl). You also can’t go wrong with adding a few falsies to the equation (Kylie Jenner is a fan of Wispies). Batter up!
5. Trashy Brights
We hope you don’t take this the wrong way; if blue shadow and hot pink lips have been helping you feel like the best baddest version of yourself for years, by all means, you do you, girl, but for those of us who’ve been on the neutral train since high school, this next beauty trend is about to pack a whole lot of punch. Blue eyeshadow and neon pink pouts have been on our radar since Jeremy Scott’s parade of Barbie doll-like models featuring these two bright shades. Scott’s not the only one embracing traffic-stopping color this season; Fendi created artfully rendered eye makeup displays composed of up to five different highly pigmented pops of color at one time!
