5 Ways to Wear Denim Cutoffs with Class

Apparel, Outfit Ideas, What's Trending  /   /  By Sarah Wetmore

The secret to pulling off cutoffs at any age (really!) can be summed up in one word—balance. The less you’ve got on bottom, the more you’ve got to have on top. When two thirds of your stems are showing, keep two thirds of your upper body under wraps. Any less and you’ll be walking the fine line between all-American chic and teen selfie queen/festival fangirl.

Here’s how to make cutoff math work for you.

1. Embrace the Mullet Effect

Go for business on the top, party on the bottom. Pair hanging-off-the-hips denim cutoffs with a white button-down boyfriend-inspired shirt. Crisp and clean on top, frayed and fun on the bottom. Carry a structured tote for added polish.

2. Layer Like You Just Don’t Ca-re

Channel your inner ‘90s girl and tie a flannel around your waist before you head out the door. Easy, breezy, and free from peeking cheeks (not that your cutoffs would be anywhere near that short, of course). Alternatively, an on-trend sleeveless trench does the trick, too!

3. Be a Lady in the Street

Make Aunt Coco proud by topping your cutoffs with a warm weather jacket (tweed optional) and pairing them with sophisticated pumps. Here’s how the math works here: the longer the cutoffs, the higher the heel you’ll be able to get away with.

4. Do Like the Parisians Do

Earn international cutoff acclaim by opting for a striped three-quarter length shirt and finishing off your ‘fit with a fedora. Instant French girl flair achieved!

5. Go Canadian for a Day

You know the rule—as long as your jean pieces aren’t the same shade, denim on denim is a go. Keep the sporty streak going with clean white Converse kicks and a hands-free cross-body bag.
