8 Classic Pieces Every Woman Needs in Her Wardrobe

When we met Jamie Schmones Erickson, one of the real women featured in our Find Your Perfect campaign, we marveled at loyalty to a few key pieces in her wardrobe. Her olive green military jacket, for example. “I’ve had [it] for, like, 12 years. Every season I might go buy a spring coat, but I always come back to that jacket. Unless I have on army pants—then I’ll wear a jean jacket, but it’s one or the other.” Jamie knows that trends come and go, but classic pieces last a lifetime. From a black leather tote to timeless white jeans, there are certain fashion staples you just need in your closet. And we promise you’ll wear them all year round. So check off the list with these eight essential items.

Staples 7

1. The White Jeans

Not just for summer, J.Crew white jeans work wonders with neutrals in fall and well into winter. We love ’em with Tory Burch chelsea boots and a suede moto jacket.

Staples 5

2. The Chambray Shirt

Come fall, it doesn’t get better (or easier) than a chambray shirt with leather pants. Lose the coat in warmer months.

Staples 4

3. The Military Jacket

This Madewell jacket is perfect for all the between-season layering around fall and spring. We love it layered under a coat in the dead of winter, too.

Staples 3

4. The Striped Shirt

Add stripes and you’re instantly chic. This classic J.Crew style brings French-girl charm to any outfit.

Staples 6

5. The Chelsea Boot

A must-have shoe for all seasons, the suede Chelsea boot goes with pretty much anything and everything.

Staples 1

6. The Leather Tote

The perfect everyday bag. From shopping to traveling and everything in between, this Baggu tote’s got you covered.

Staples 8

7. The Denim Jacket

It doesn’t get any more timeless than a Levi’s jean jacket. The perfect topper for any look.

Staples 2

8. The Peacoat

Warm, dependable, versatile, classic. Invest in a Burberry peacoat with lasting style.

This seems J.Crew themed in a very overt way. Is this a sponsored post? What is up with that?

  2. Nina Louie October 3, 2016 at 11:30 AM

Hi Jenny, it’s not a sponsored post, no. We don’t have any sponsored posts on this blog, and we aim to cover many different styles here. This particular article was inspired by Jamie Schmones Erickson, a woman who does tend to wear a lot of J.Crew and other brands with a similar, sort of classic American aesthetic — for example, Steven Alan. I think that’s what you’re noticing. Thanks for reading!

    Hi Nina,

    Nice response. 😉 Nice blog.

You do realize not everyone can wear those styles. For example, I don’t consider myself large, however, would never wear horizontal stripes. Some of the styles were just too casual.

Quite a few expensive pieces. come on, price it down; and provide plus size alternatives. Unfortunately, women shop constantly – no one buys a wardrobe anymore! So evolve.

I thought the photos perfectly represented the blog subject, 8 classic pieces. I am plus size and own several of the 8 pieces discussed. You can pair them with YOUR style of choice.

  10. Janet October 23, 2016 at 6:53 AM

Where is the skirt from that is paired with denim jacket?

  11. Nina Louie October 24, 2016 at 10:13 AM

Hi Janet! The pinstriped skirt paired with the denim jacket is by a designer named Marissa Webb. It’s the “Amber Pinstripe Midi Skirt.” I don’t see one available on eBay right now but I’d keep watching Marissa Webb listings to see if it comes up. I’ll do the same and comment again if/when I see one for you. Thanks for reading!

Who is the designer of the ring the model is wearing? Twisted with gold and silver? I would love to buy one like it!
