How We Became Birkenstock Believers

Accessories, Most Wanted, What's Trending  /   /  By Sarah Wetmore

Against advice from some of our best shopping buddies, but fueled by the fact that we love a good fashion challenge, we tried the Birkenstock trend recently. Since then, our Birks have lent support as we navigated Parisian cobblestone, climbed San Francisco hills, and turned the heads of convention questioners who’ve also hopped on the Birken-bandwagon.

Hesitant to try the trend that’s got fashion bloggers, off-duty models, and poet/artists striking a pose for lenses on the street, poolside, and at the hottest Coachella parties? Slip on your first pair of shiny silver-strapped Birkenstocks and you’ll want to walk more than a mile in these shoes. The comfort factor speaks for itself, and as for the way you update this beloved sandal for summer 2015, that’s up to you. With cutesy dresses, slim trousers, or an all-white monochromatic ensemble, your pristinely pedicured feet will be thanking you for treating them right this season.

This is a great and timely piece – and I actually just wrote a quick entry about it on my blog! Basically – I’m torn, but leaning towards liking them and maybe buying a pair. Comfort is definitely important, and I like how you styled them in your photos and your suggestions!

I love, love, love my birkis. I have nine pairs and wear them all summer, with a perfect pedi of course. I even have a pair for just in the house, instead of slippers. You can’t beat the comfort and with all of the new designs and colors, how could I choose just one! Whether you’re out in the yard, running at work, shopping for hours or chasing the kids, these sandals last for years. You can even buy replacement cork footbeds… They are definitely a staple in my shoe collection.

Birkenstocks start out comfortable but after some walking and a few days, my feet and legs feel sore. Also I noticed that when people wear birkies all the time they have horrible callouses on their heels. That happened to me and no amount of lotion would help. Never again.

I love the Birk idea, Mephistos are better for my back. I have 6 pairs including silver and gold. The silver with jeans and the gold with khakis and tanned feet are a great summer look!
