Outfits Inspired by the Cast of HBO’s “Girls”

One of our favorite shows, Girls, is coming to a close this week with its final episode airing Sunday, April 16th on HBO. From its eerily accurate portrayal of post-grad reality to its somewhat charmed depiction of New York City living—Girls has served as a modern day Sex and the City for the millennial generation. Millenials or not, we, the editors of Style Stories, were continually inspired by the down-to-earth fashion of the four main characters as they grappled with life in the big city and the start of adulthood. So whether you consider yourself more of a Hannah or a Shoshana, dress the part with outfits inspired by the stylish cast.

1. Hannah Horvath

As befits the self-proclaimed “voice of a generation,” Hannah’s style is a quirky mix of feminine shapes, bohemian florals, and playful combinations from an eclectic closet. Like the character herself, Hannah’s wardrobe is a bit of a hodge-podge. But in the best way possible.

Hannah by Day
Hannah’s style has a thrifty Brooklyn vibe. By day, she’s often spotted in vintage-inspired florals and casual, feminine accessories. Her look is laid back and defined by one-of-a-kind pieces.

Hannah by Night
Hannah rarely dresses up on the show, but when she does, eyeliner is a major player in the look. So for nighttime, pair a bold cat’s eye with a denim dress and a colorful leather jacket for a quirky-cool outfit.

2. Marnie Michaels
As Hannah’s best friend and former roomie, Marnie’s style is clean-cut and always put together. From work tops to pencil skirts, Marnie uses classic basics to achieve the perfect “young professional” look.

Marnie by Day
For a refined daytime look, update your jeans-and-tee uniform with a pair of dark-wash skinnies and a colorful peplum top.

Marnie by Night
Conservative, tasteful, and casually elegant. Marnie is most likely to pull up to a party in a J.Crew dress with pretty and polished accessories.

3. Jessa Johansson
A free-spirited globetrotter with uncaged confidence, Jessa’s bohemian style is eccentric and effortless. Whether she’s an artist or not, she dresses the part. Think exotic finds, oversized pieces, and layered prints.

Jessa by Day
Toss on a maxi dress and pile on the accessories for an airy, adventurous, daytime look. Jessa’s outfits always have feminine appeal, so step into a pair of sky-high platforms.

Jessa by Night
Jessa is never afraid to turn on her avant-garde edginess by night. Think textured layers and structured silhouettes.

4. Shoshanna Shapiro
Offbeat, spunky, and just the slightest bit awkward, Shoshanna has the most “girly” style of the cast. Pinks, purples, and glitter play a big part in her wardrobe, but she knows how to dress it all up with mature staples.

Shosh by Day
Cute and casual, a printed mini skirt pairs perfectly with a brightly colored tee. Delicate details top off the look.

Shosh by Night
Shoshanna’s silhouette stays the same by night, but she dresses it up with sequins and a sleek navy blazer.
