“You don’t understand,” whines Alicia Silverstone, as the formidable, ditzy-chic Cher in the movie Clueless. As her character is robbed at gunpoint, she pleads “This is an Alaïa . . . [He’s], like, a totally important designer.” It’s one of the most quoted lines in the film—and one of the funniest to fashion lovers who know just how special Alaïa’s designs are. They’re collectible. And Azzedine Alaïa is a true original in the fashion industry. He worked for Christian Dior and Thierry Mugler before starting his own line, and has stayed true to himself even as he’s soared to fame.
For this week’s “Shoes for Tues” pick we chose Alaïa’s mesh suede bootie. It’s a beauty we dream of owning one day. It was love at first sight when we saw the soft suede finish, thick mesh panels, and sexy high heel. But our favorite part is by far the back. Instead of sliding all the way up, the zipper stops short and creates a sort of butterfly effect with rounded wing-like edges. It’s this kind of attention to detail—to beauty—that has us hooked.
