This picture says it all—it’s a pretty depiction of the mess we’re sure to make when we attempt to do a smoky eye. So today we’re walking through the proper technique step by step in order to master the art of date-night makeup once and for all. Learn along with us!
Step 1: Apply primer to your lid. This will make your eye shadow appear more vibrant and last longer without creasing.
Step 2 (above left): Add your color—we used navy but gray works well, too—all over your lid, covering the area from your lash line to your crease. Use a gentle patting motion to minimize falling powder. Then swipe it along your lower lash line and connect the bottom color line to your upper lid color at the inner and outer corners. No need to do any blending yet—we’ll get to that.
Step 3 (above right): Softly apply a charcoal hue all the way around the edges of the color on your eyelid to intensify the shade. Blend it around the outer corner of your eye too, but use a very light touch along your lower lash line or skip it altogether.
Step 4 (above left): Blend a black shade into your eyelid crease where the navy and charcoal meet. For extra depth, focus the application on the outermost part of the eyelid.
Step 5 (above right): Add a bit of silver eye shadow to the innermost corner of your eye as a highlighter.
Step 6 (above left & right): Complete the look by lining your upper and lower lash lines with black eyeliner. Then add mascara, curl your lashes, and finish with nude lipstick.
