Spied on the Street: DIY Done Right

Featured, Persons of Interest, Street Style  /   /  By Sarah Wetmore

When it’s finally no longer jacket weather, just like Drew Barrymore’s charming character Julia in The Wedding Singer declares and Adam Sandler’s character who’s falling for Julia notices and says, “She said it wasn’t jacket weather anymore,” draw outfit inspiration from this unique street style look. A silky solid white slip tank with wavy black piping lays just the right supporting foundation to allow this customized denim to shine. We’ve been such big fans of personalized denim for months now, whether that personal stamp manifests itself in the form of a DIY-ed step hem or a bit of monogrammed embroidery.

Recently, we ran into Refinery29’s Styling Director, Emily Holland, on the street and the oversized olive green floral patches decorating her jeans were unlike any other DIY flourish we’ve seen. Floral patches? For spring? Actually groundbreaking, when you wear it like this. We also really appreciate the sexy sliver of skin between the cropped light wash reinvented mom jeans and the black leather babouche shoes with silver buckle detailing add that extra individuality. What’s more, did you notice that this style star’s hoop earrings pick up the circular buckle detailing on the slippers? And the botanical motif on her cat eye sunglasses echo the floral print of her patches? That’s skill, people. We’re taking notes. For us, the icing on the cake was the discovery that she bought her jeans on eBay—already this amazingly DIY’d. Browse here to see if you can replicate the look.
