Spotlight On: Nicole Miller

Designers, Persons of Interest  /   /  By Nina Louie

We’ve fallen hard for Nicole Miller’s fall collection, available now at our Designer Collective. Slim silhouettes in printed silk and sporty-sleek neoprene are splashed with abstract feather graphics and luxe beaded and braided appliqués—absolutely gorgeous! So we sat down with the designer to talk about her design inspiration, her most personal pieces, and her favorite fall beauty trends.

1. What was the inspiration behind your fall 2014 collection?

I was inspired by female warriors of all kinds, from anime princess Mononoke, to Elle Driver in Kill Bill, Arcee, the female transformer, and of course Hangaku Gozen, the female samurai. This collection is about powerful women and fearless fashion. I wanted to show that you don’t have to wear a suit to feel strong!

2. Were you thinking of any modern-day real-life warriors?

I was more interested in mythological, fantastical, and legendary heroines like Taino, Arcee, and the “T-X” from Terminator 3, among others. I was also particularly influenced by Boudica, queen of the British Iceni tribe, who led an uprising against the occupying forces of the Roman Empire.

3. What motif or detail do you love best in the collection?

I absolutely love the feather pieces, especially the peacock ones because they are so unique!

4. Is there one special piece that’s most personal to you? A labor of love?

One of the most special pieces is the appliquéd and braided leather. I had one of the print layouts interpreted as a leather design, which I love.

5. What sort of beauty look are you envisioning for fall? What feels new & now?

We did a braided Mohawk for our Fall 2014 collection—which modernized the French braid. We completed the look with a smoky eye and ombré nails using butter LONDON’s ‘Union Jack Black’ layered with ‘Knees Up’.
