An eyewear icon since 1956, Ray Ban’s Wayfarer has had a good run in the fashion world. With their plastic trapezoidal frames and unisex versatility, these shades are a classic. And while we don’t think they’ll ever go out of style, Australian eyewear brand Le Specs have come out with a refreshing take on the Wayfarer’s classic silhouette that we’re voting as spring’s men’s must-have accessory: the Master Tamers.
But first, a bit of history.
Inspired by midcentury design, the Wayfarer gained quick popularity in the ’50s and ’60s. From John F. Kennedy to Audrey Hepburn, the Wayfarer’s classic silhouette was worn by pop culture style icons—and that never changed. Michael Jackson performed in them in the ’80s. Mary Kate Olsen rocked them on the streets in the year 2000 and beyond.
The list goes on.
The best part about the Wayfarer is that pretty much anyone can style them (and pretty much everyone with even an ounce of stylishness has a pair). They’ve had a long life, and now, Le Specs is taking over as the new everyday shade.
Established on the Australian shores of Bondi in 1979, the Le Specs brand has that cool surfer sensibility, but with a sophisticated spin. And their new Master Tamers gives a contemporary feel to the old school Wayfarer. Made from polythermidie, the Master Tamer is just as functional as they are fashionable; they’re lightweight and flexible, super-sleek.
So, boys, are you ready to give your shades an upgrade?
