The classic ‘90s backless shoe is back. Embodying everything easy about the slip on/slip off nature of street to sand summer style, mules are your go-to shoes for the next few months. You may remember them from decades past, but what we’d like to remind you of is just how versatile they are, and how well they’ll pair with your modern wardrobe. Today, you can pair mules with distressed boyfriend jeans a la Jennifer Lawrence, ankle-baring skinny jeans like Sienna Miller, skirts, and so on.
Embrace the return of the mule by swapping out flip-flops in favor of open-toed or close-toed mules. Remember to always flash some ankle when you pair pants with mules, say yes to ‘70s-inspired suede, look for block-heeled pairs for running around town, and aim for more frontal coverage than the skimpy mules Carrie Bradshaw rocked with shorter-than-short rompers and full-on furs.
