The Top 5 Denim Trends to Try This Fall

Apparel, Most Wanted, What's Trending  /   /  By Sarah Wetmore

Roughly a decade since we’ve actually gone back to school, we still back to school shop. Is that weird? Phew. We didn’t think it was, either. Each summer, we start looking forward to back to school shopping with the same anticipation that builds for Pumpkin Spice Lattes and the return of our favorite TV shows (which have been on summer break for what feels like an eternity).

Back to school shopping, whether with a classroom or cubicle as your destination, reliably conjures warm fuzzy feelings towards tall leather boots, chunky knits, classic rain boots, heavy tartan scarves, enough flannel to sink a ship, and of course, denim! This year, we’ve got the following five denim trends on our shopping lists.

1. Boyfriend Jeans

Suffering from skinny jean fatigue? Yeah, we are, too. The trick with boyfriend jeans is finding a pair that comes across slouchy—not sloppy. For weekday meetings, stick to darker washes with zero to minimal destruction (if destruction is inevitable, aim for repaired destruction detailing). Pair with a top that says you mean business, a blazer with cuffed sleeves, for example, and ladylike pumps for a polished yet comfortable ensemble. Who wants extra credit? Slip into a bodysuit before you button up your boyfriend jeans and top it with a tailored jacket for a savvy cutting edge style.

8 3 denim skirts

2. Denim Skirts

No, not like the Abercrombie sky-high cut ones we misguidedly wore in past lives, and not like the extra long styles associated with sister wives and the Midwest. We’re craving a fresh new take on the denim skirt this fall—think A-line button down denim skirts. Achieving the right skirt length is key. Any hem lower than your knee risks looking dowdy. Picture finding a white vintage Levi’s denim skirt online and taking scissors to it so that it hits the perfect above the knee thigh grazing length. Voila! You’ll be ahead of the class in this leading raw edged look, which brings us to the next trend we’re on the lookout for.

3. Raw Edges

Unfinished is the new black, and ankles are the new cleavage. This punk/street style-inspired trend is universally appealing on all denim forms, from pants to skirts and dresses to shorts. Take your fashion fate into your own hands if you dare, or shop the many pre-sheared pieces. Flashing some ankle is our favorite new styling trick to keeping jeans from wearing you and showing skin in an extremely subtle way.

8 3 denim culottes

4. Denim Culottes

In case you missed our earlier piece in defense of culottes, check it out first. We’ll wait. Ok, now that you’ve heard us out, are you ready to try this trend in denim? You’ll want to keep your culottes above the ankle (flirt point alert!), and pair them with standout shoes—we know you’ll ace that part! Try a chunky platform or another heel you’re comfortable wearing to achieve balance and flattering proportions.

8 3 denim flares

5. Flared Denim

All who search for longer legs and slimmer waistlines, say hello to your sure to be favorite fall denim trend. Try a high waist and pairing with platform heels for the full ‘70s effect. Promise us you’ll hem your flares for the shoes you plan to wear with them, ok? The same pair of flares will not work for all heel lengths, and if you don’t plan ahead, you’ll either be dragging a destroyed (not in a good way) hem around or appear as if you’re planning for a great flood—not chic.
